OSW Playwrights' Unit
In 2006, Oregon Stage Works established its Playwrights' Unit for the development and production of new American plays. This group consists of the following local playwrights:
Julie Excell earned a B.A. in Theatre and M.A. in English Literature from the University of Colorado, prior to moving to Ashland four years ago. While in Colorado, she was active as an actor, director, and playwright. Her two-woman historical play, "Bluebird," had a successful run in Gold Hill, Colorado, and was the subject of a feature story on a local NPR affiliate radio station. In Oregon, her short play, "Divorce/Match," was staged at Paschal Winery last summer. As an actor, Julie appeared at Oregon Stage Works as Nan Wightman in Molly Best Tinsley's play Glacial Genes, a product of the Playwright's Unit. A newcomer to the Unit, Julie is excited and honored to be included.
Roy Glassberg holds advanced degrees in Theatre from Southern Illinois University and The University of Iowa. He is a published fiction writer, and his story Rifka a Cracked Record was honorably mentioned in the 1997 O. Henry awards as being one of the 50 best American stories of the year. He has taught Theater and English. He acts, as well, having appeared recently as Dr. Gomm in Oregon Stage Works production of The Elephant Man.
Richard Moeschl is Arts and Entertainment Editor for the Mail Tribune and the Ashland Daily Tidings, a weekly columnist, theater critic, and lecturer. Author of Exploring the Sky, Chicago Review Press, he is Executive Director of Horizon Institute which explores the relationship between science, spirituality and the humanities. A founding member of the Playwrights' Unit at Oregon Stage Works, Richard serves on several non-profit arts boards. His play, Arthurs Dreams, produced at Oregon Stage Works won the 2006 Oregon Book Award for Drama.
Cathy Noah is city editor of the Mail Tribune, where she's worked for 10 years as part of a lifelong career in journalism. She began dabbling in playwrighting in 2002 and has had readings of a half-dozen of her 10-minute plays with Oregon Stage Works and Ashland Community Theater. She joined the Playwrights Unit in 2006 and very much appreciates her colleagues' insights, suggestions and gentle nudges toward a full-length play.

Bob Valine lives in Ashland where he works as a writer, editor, and part-time college writing instructor. While earning an M.A. in English at the University of California, Davis, he translated and directed a French farce. That led to a Schubert Playwriting Fellowship, an M.F.A. in Theater Arts, staged readings and productions at the Mark Taper Forum and the American Conservatory Theater, and productions at several university and community theaters. In the late 70's he founded and edited "West Coast Plays: Outstanding New Plays from West Coast Theaters." Since retiring from teaching in California, he's returned to playwriting and has had two staged readings with the Ashland Community Theater and a production with the Two Chairs Theater in Grand Junction, Colorado.
